The Sales Shift - From Awkward to Unstoppable

The Fire Stage

Too many great planners lose opportunities because they’ve never been taught to love sales. In this dynamic, practical talk, James Ashford redefines sales as the most important skill in a planner’s toolkit — not to close deals, but to change lives. You’ll learn how to reframe your mindset, overcome resistance, and turn your client conversations into high-conviction, high-conversion experiences. It’s time for the profession to step up — not shrink back — when it comes to selling.

Underwhelming, underqualified & really f*cking annoying

The Fire Stage

This is a story of setbacks, quiet tears in the toilet, and those watch me moments that define a career. Starting with the first-ever feedback she received (which also happens to be the title of her keynote), Anna shares the journey from tea girl to Managing Director with over 10 years of challenges. It’s a candid and hopeful look at how titles and qualifications are no match for a bit of grit, self-belief and a gentle but determined “I’ll show you.”

ROUND THREE:
COLOSSAL CONVERSATIONS

The Colossal Conversations are five 10-minute TED-Style talks from a variety of professionals, each passionate about their corner of the financial planning and wealth management landscape.

THE FIRE STAGE

Colossal Conversation 1

Cameron Wood, Iress: Embrace your Superpower:  Cameron will explore the idea that everyone has a unique “superpower”, an innate trait that, when embraced, can lead to greater fulfilment and success. He’ll share how his own superpower, fierce competitiveness, was something he once tried to hide, believing it didn’t fit with societal expectations. But by leaning into it, he unlocked new opportunities, including a career move where that competitive edge became a real asset. Cameron will encourage the audience to reflect on their own superpowers and consider how these can be used not only for personal growth but also to make a meaningful impact.

Andrew Yule, M&G: Beyond the Numbers: A Human Lens on Risk When we talk about risk in financial planning, we often default to numbers—volatility, drawdowns, standard deviations. But risk isn’t just a metric. It’s a feeling. It’s the knot in your stomach when markets tumble. It’s the sleepless nights, the second-guessing, the quiet fear of not fulfilling their dreams. In this talk, Andrew will share a personal journey that challenged his understanding of risk -- not as a statistic, but as a profoundly human experience. He’ll explore how traditional models, while useful, only scratch the surface of what clients truly go through. And he’ll share how real transformation begins when we stop talking about risk and start listening to how it feels.

Ben Moxon, Orbis Investments (UK) Limited: Concentration Risk: Concentration Risk: Navigating the Narrow Market Markets today are increasingly dominated by a small group of US megacap tech stocks—the so-called “Magnificent 7.” This extreme concentration poses a hidden risk for investors, especially those in passive strategies or growth-focused active funds. In this session, Ben will explore why the current market structure leaves portfolios vulnerable and what investors can do about it. He will also examine how investors can navigate today’s concentrated markets by applying a more balanced style framework—one designed to enhance long-term outcomes and mitigate downside risk.

Brad Stratton, Morningstar Wealth UK Limited: Client approved AI user cases for financial advisers: Client approved AI use cases for financial advisers Bradley Stratton will overview Morningstar Wealth’s latest adviser and client research. Identifying AI use cases within your practices can drive efficiencies and free up time to focus on your business and your clients. Not all use cases are created equal. Insight from this research shows which areas clients are happy for you to utilise AI for and which they are not.

FINAL TALK

George Kinder
Toward a Fiduciary Society
The Fire Stage

We are fiduciaries toward our clients when we put their interests ahead of our own. We model the best of humanity. Our profession is more trusted because of it. So why is it that the companies that surround us and serve us aren’t fiduciaries in everything they do? The world would be a better place if they were.

In this keynote address, George Kinder, the father of life planning and author of The Three Domains of Freedom, redefines how financial planners model being fiduciaries. From developing a personal practice of being present to designing and delivering both their own and their clients' life plans, to taking an active role in shaping society, George delivers concrete steps financial advisers can take to bring the meaning of fiduciary beyond regulations and make it a practical, purposeful, and even profound mission, enhancing both their business and their brand.

He closes with a grand vision: to expand the fiduciary culture that financial advisers have created and bring it across society with a movement he calls Fiduciary In All Things (FIAT). He aims to bring trustworthiness to all large institutions, whether corporations, governments, or nonprofits, by making sure they place the truth, democracy, the planet, and humanity ahead of their own self-interest.
