Money is something which we are told “you will learn about one day.” For many, “one day” is too late, and they find themselves in tough situations which could have been avoided with the correct knowledge and understanding.
Thinking about personal finances is something which causes stress and anxiety to a large part of society. Research by the OECD has found that under half of UK adults have an acceptable minimum level of financial knowledge. While the Citizen’s Advice Bureau found that people in debt will wait for on average one year before asking anyone for help .
These problems could be eradicated by introducing financial capability as a lesson to be learned in schools from a young age.
The Money Charity (TMC) is the only UK charity which aims to help anyone of any age to manage their money. Their expertly-delivered outreach programmes have reached over 160,000 young people in the UK since 2010. You can read more about them here.
TMC offers fun and interactive workshops tailored to schools and students’ needs lasting anywhere between one hour and a full school day. In these workshops, young people get the chance to debate and discuss topics which they would not done have before.
Each workshop delivery costs £200 which covers everything from start to finish. This works out at £9.09 per young person reached; a highly cost-effective way of changing their lives for the better.
Support of £25,000 could support delivery of 125 workshops, reaching over 2,500 young people.
So, here’s the plan…
You decide to support
That’s a great start! You’re already on your way to helping the next generation become financially aware. You can support onehour sessions at £200 each. 100% of this money goes to The Money Charity.
You choose a school
You choose which school you would like to support, and which age group(s) in that school. If TMC can’t obtain the agreement of that school, they’ll approach other schools in that area.
You feel awesome
Be safe in the knowledge that you are indeed awesome. Bravo for supporting the next generation.
